Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Communication and Technology

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROGRAMME

The common regulations for admission requirements in all Ph.D. Degrees Programmes of Murang’a university of Technology shall apply.   In addition to the above, the candidate shall be a holder of a relevant Master’s Degree of Murang’a University of Technology or its equivalent from other universities recognized by Murang’a University of Technology Senate and Commission for University Education (CUE)

DURATION OF STUDY

This is a three (3) year programme with the first year focusing on coursework. The remaining two (2) years, the learner shall embark on proposal development, data collection and thesis writing.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of programme, the learner should be able to:

  • Design, and evaluate instructional systems
  • Assess different approaches and strategies of instruction
  • Carry out research on instructional strategies
  • Develop a variety of instructional media

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  • A student shall be required to:
    1. Attend at least 2/3 of lectures to be allowed to sit for end of semester examinations
    2. Conduct research and make presentations in seminars
    3. Write and publish at least two (2) research papers in peer reviewed journals before submitting research report
    4. Present a research report to a panel in line with the post-graduate studies policy
  • Obligation of lecturers
    1. Facilitate learning
    2. Ensure 100% coverage of the course outline
    3. Guide and supervise research work
    4. Examine learners

STUDENT ASSESSMENT POLICY

The assessment shall take two major categories as follows:

  1. At least two (2) Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) shall be administered during the semester which shall account for 40%
  2. End of semester examinations shall account for 60%

GRADING SYSTEM

The marks earned by a student in respective courses including research and thesis shall be graded as follows

The Pass Mark for each course unit shall be 50%

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

A candidate shall graduate with a PhD in Educational Communication & Technology after satisfying the following:

  • Passed all common and specialization courses
  • Submit to the school evidence of acceptance for publication of two (2) research papers in refereed journals
  • Submit bound copies of thesis to the Directorate of Post Graduate Studies (6 copies)
  • Submit one (1) soft copy (in CD) to the Directorate of Post Graduate Studies
  • Cleared by other relevant University departments including finance and library.
